February 21, 2007 – Suzallo Café
Present: Nari Corley-Wheeler, Lily Le, Jacob Galfano
Projects:
- Newsletter: Layout and editing of articles is in full-swing. Thank you to everyone for your contributions. However, there is still much to be done:
Editing: The group decided to edit by consensus; in other words, we will be editing articles as a group to make more cohesive our different writing styles. This will begin during Saturday’s session.
Layout: With no lack of contributions, the group decided to increase the page number from 6 to 8 – which will be consisted of two tabloid-size (11” x 17”) sheets folded in half.
Photos: Several sources have expressed interest in contributing photos for future newsletters. For the current issue, photos will be supplied by Jonathan Moeller, YES! magazine, Lily Le, and Davey D.

Distribution: The group decided it would start out by distributing the newsletters by hand, at strategic locations across the city. These include:
U-District: Tribant Chai; Café on the Ave; Solstice; Shingka’s; The Mix; The HUB; Odegaard Undergrad. Library; Comm. Building/Simpson Center; Dormitories
Fremont: Fremont Coffee House; Ladro; PCC
Ballard: Tea House; Royal Cupcake; Market (Phinney)
Central District: Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center
Seattle: Pike Place; Zitgeist
Bellevue: Bellevue Community Center
Bothell: UW Bothell
Capital Hill: Capital Hill Arts Center; Used Record Store; Pho Restaurant; Joe’s
West Seattle: Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Website: Once the JHR-USA website is finished, and UW’s chapter is added, there is the option to add an electronic version of the newsletter. This will be explored following completion of the hard copy version.
Again, if anybody has ideas or suggestions about what the website might look like in general, please email
Regina.
Mailbox: Woohoo! Journalists for Human Rights now has a campus mailbox. Please mail all correspondence to:
Journalists for Human Rights
UW Box 352238, SAO Box 225
Seattle, WA 98195-2238
Fundraising: The group decided it would consult Jamie Mayerfeld (faculty advisor) for ideas for fundraising. This will be discussed at the next general meeting. If you have any ideas, please email j4hr@u.washington.edu
Archiving: JHR needs volunteers to begin archiving processes; in other words, for future reference and other student chapters, a step-by-step, detailed account would be helpful.
Further, the group will begin using Catalyst Online Tools to share files. These two approaches can dovetail, as it were.
Next Meeting: The next general meeting will be Wednesday, 2/28, at Suzallo Cafe. A reminder email will be sent out in advance.
The group is still accepting suggestions for optimal meeting times. Please send your desired day/time to j4hr@u.washington.edu
Tentative Agenda for meeting #10:
- Fundraising: Open-mic benefit? Ideas? Jamie Mayerfeld
- Newsletter: Electronic? Website?
