JHR Minutes #25

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 @ Smith 311

Present: Nari Corley-Wheeler; Jacob Galfano; Janice Goh; Yuhei Miyauchi; Rachel Proefke; Nick Wong

Get Published!: The group still plans to begin publication of its next issue of The Liaison in January; its theme remains “Justice & Human Rights.” If you’re interested in contributing to this very important topic, please send your questions, ideas, and/or drafts to j4hr@u.washington.edu

Also, Nick wisely advised to begin discussions with local schools about youth participation in the spring quarter of The Liaison: “Youth, Education, & Human Rights.” Possible schools in the area to inquire with include Franklin, Garfield, Roosevelt, & Cleveland. Janice suggested working with campus services with connections to area schools like Pipeline. If you are interested in helping with this exciting project, please contact us: j4hr@u.washington.edu

JHR will continue work on its human rights pamphlet, Why Human Rights? Although the exact format has not yet been decided, the group hopes this collection of JHR members’ ideas, beliefs, values, etc. will serve as a forum for discussion about the importance of human rights in journalism, in policy, on college campuses, and in the community. Is this global? Is it local? Are human rights a legal tool? A moral tool? Are some human rights more fundamental than others?

These were but a few questions surfaced at the meeting; this discussion will be continued at the first meeting of the winter quarter (see below), and will frame Why Human Rights? Come be a part of this lively and poignant discussion!

Speak Silence!: JHR plans to hold this fundraiser in late January or early February, and needs help in the following areas:

- Finance/Budget (contact Diana)

- Exhibit Design

- Silent Auction/Donations (contact Nari)

- Promotion/Literature (contact Anthony)

- Entertainment/Venue (contact Janice)

The group still hopes to hold the silence phase at the HUB, and the breaking the silence phase at a U-District venue (live music, spoken word, etc.). If you’re interested in helping, please don’t hesitate to contact us: j4hr@u.washington.edu

Other Fundraising:

- JHR has started the process of expansion to the University of Washington’s Bothell campus. The benefits of this move include a wider membership base and audience, more available funding, and tapping into UWB’s human rights minor resource base. Funding will cover such needs as paper, a banner, and travel/conference costs for next summer’s JHR Student Chapter Summit in Toronto. Nari and Diana will work on the budget for these.

- Janice and Nick discussed the Mary Gates Scholarship Leadership option. It looks like one requirement is to work on a project – which has already been done (The Liaison, sponsored speaking events, workshops, etc.) One idea may be to use the money for the proposed collaborative project with Seattle’s CLP and UW’s Communication Department – a Journalism Day, of sorts. A proposal is required by January 22nd; if you’re interested in helping, please contact us: j4hr@u.washington.edu

News:

- JHR has lined up a very exciting interview with three local women responsible for youth empowerment & hip-hop culture. Logistics are being planned, but JHR will conduct this interview and create a multi-media report, including print and an online version complete with audio of comments and performances.

The interview will include Jen Johnson of the Seattle Debate Foundation, Julie Chang Schulman of 206 Zulu and Hip-hop Congress, and Angela Dy Martinez of Youth Speaks. It will also include comments and performance examples of the youth these wonderful women work with.

For a wonderful glimpse of the Seattle Debate Foundation’s work, check out this article in the Tacoma News Tribune (pay particular attention to the heated debate (!) in the comments section).

The group needs volunteers to conduct the interview; this is a wonderful opportunity to practice your journalism skills. Please contact us if you are interested: j4hr@u.washington.edu

- As mentioned earlier, JHR is planning a project to bring speakers, workshops, and other events to the UW campus for a Journalism Day in May. So far, JHR will work with the off-campus group The Common Language Project and UW’s Department of Communication to offer resources and services for students to improve their media activism, literacy, access, and participation.

Other potential collaborators include Reclaim the Media, The Daily, KBCS Radio, Rainy Dawg Radio, and more. If you have any ideas or would like to be a part of this planning committee, please contact us: j4hr@u.washington.edu

- JHR is setting up a potential event on campus with local independent journalist Ethan Casey. Ethan is creating a documentary film on the latest on press freedom and human rights violations in Pakistan, and hopes to screen the film on campus – perhaps followed by a discussion with the director himself. Stay tuned for more information.

- Americans for Informed Democracy has created a competition called Rights, Camera, Action! – in which it will select 10 winning proposals and fund their project (including a video camera) and their travel to Washington DC to present the film.

Much like the Mary Gates Scholarship, JHR needs volunteers who are interested to put together a proposal for submission by January 10th. Please contact us if you’re interested in this new-to-JHR-medium-project!

Potential Speakers: JHR would like to organize, sponsor, and promote speaking engagements on or near campus. Potential speakers:

- Steve Bezruchka (Winter 08)

- Pat Graney (Winter 08)

Tabling: JHR will table in early January to continue reaching out to new and potential members, as well as to inform the campus community about what JHR is working on. If you’re interested in volunteering, please let us know: j4hr@u.washington.edu
