JHR Minutes #15

April 26, 2007 – Home of Nari & Diana

Present: Nari Corley-Wheeler, Rachel Proefke, Yuhei Miyauchi, Diana Archambault, Anthony Shelley, Trevor Payne, Lily Le, Jacob Galfano

Announcements: Please check out the announcements at the end of this report!

Funds: The deadline for funding proposals for the 2006/2007 school year has passed; JHR will wait until the Fall Quarter of 2007 to submit the first of annual proposals, and will likely be itemized similar to the previous model (see: Meeting #14 Minutes).

As for covering the cost of events and projects for this quarter, the group might consider an end-of-the-year fundraising event.

Projects:

Event: On Thursday evening ( 7 pm), May 3 Emilio Tojin Lopez will speak at the University of Washington about civil society’s role in the genocide case versus Rios Montt (and others accountable for human rights atrocities in Guatemala in the 1980s and through the present). Logistics were discussed:

JHR (and other co-sponsors) will set up a table on which to offer a sign-up sheet for this email list; it will also feature Genocide postcards (Amnesty). Other tables will be reserved from the resource center.

Anthony is submitting a story idea to the Daily; he hopes the story can run the day before the event to help promote awareness and increase attendance.

The group agreed to make class announcements, and Nari and Rachel agreed to contact professors in other departments. Posters were put up on campus (as well as off-campus sites), and fliers will be distributed on Wednesday and Thursday:

Wed: Nari, Yuhei, Rachel, Diana (10:30-12); Jacob (12-2)

Thur: Jacob (11-1:30); Anthony (1:30-2)

Rachel will talk to Phil Neff on Monday to confirm his support in tech. set up for Emilio’s presentation.

There is also an event sponsored by CHId and the Clowes Center that will feature a Guatemalan activist. This event will be held on May 16th (contact: wendyh2@u.washington.edu). JHR will offer the organizers a table at Emilio’s talk in return for a spot to table at their event.

Newsletter: Issue 2, The Liaison (theme: Immigration) will be published sometime in the second week of May. The group hopes to follow up this issue with one more before the school year ends.

Ideas for an online version of The Liaison were discussed, and might feature a blog or wiki framework. This prospect will be discussed at length during upcoming meetings. Please contact JHR if you are interested in participating.

The group also talked about making improvements to the print version, which included:

- Improving aesthetic appeal; making the newsletter more “readable”

- Incorporating a map of the world in the design and placement of articles

- Introducing the staff in a way that’s relevant to the issue’s theme

- Improving editing processes (2 editors per article written, editing before layout)

- Layout of themed versus non-themed articles

- Improving the interactive/poll section

Topics for articles were again discussed:

Nari: Brain Drain in SE Asia/Africa

Migration

Call for Submissions: If you know anybody interested in writing for this edition (especially non-students!), please have them email us: j4hr@u.washington.edu

Networking Project: Discussions are in the works to include The Liaison in a larger network of local and community-based media. This might entail content-sharing and sharing of resources, as well as cross-media training; further details will be provided at the next meeting.

Archiving: Are you an organizer? JHR needs a volunteer who can put together a system that will organize meeting notes, email correspondence, project paraphernalia, etc. This will take place on Catalyst Online Tools until the club secures an office in the HUB where we can use a common computer.

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be at 6 pm on Thursday, 5/3, in Smith 120. Join us to help set up for Emilio’s talk! A reminder email will be sent out in advance.
