JHR Minutes #30

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008 @ Smith 109

Present: Jacob Galfano; Rachel Proefke; Anthony Shelley

The Liaison/Why Human Rights?: Work continues on editing and layout for the Winter issue of The Liaison and the supplemental pamphlet, Why Human Rights? The group will meet on Friday, February 22nd from 12 pm – 6 pm at the computer lab in Mary Gates Hall. If you would like to help design our newsletter or research and write any of its components, please join us!

- For its Spotlight on… section, JHR secured an interview with nationally recognized poet Brian Turner (recipient of the 2007 Poets Prize, among other awards). Turner read one of his new poems recently at Seattle’s Richard Hugo House, and will speak about the intersection of the arts, the military, human rights, and justice.

- Rachel has been researching ways for our next newsletter (Education, Youth, and Human Rights) to be exempt from going through the Human Subjects Review process, and will provide details when they are available.

Chapter News:

- A representative from Americans for Informed Democracy will be at the Seattle campus on March 6th to check in on the status of Anthony’s Rights, Camera, Action! proposal. The group discussed a potential project featuring the intersection of its upcoming issue of The Liaison (Youth, Education), the dropping of SB 6449 (freedom of speech on campuses), and his video project. Anthony will discuss this idea further at the next meeting.

- JHR and UW’s Pakistani Student Association have decided to push back its planned event on the human rights climate of Pakistan into April. Committees are being created and planning meetings scheduled; if you are interested in participating in this wonderful organizing opportunity, please contact us immediately: j4hr@u.washington.edu

- Nari met with Professor Jamie Mayerfeld (JHR faculty adviser) for his support in helping apply for the Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship in the Spring. That aid can help pay for operational costs as well as to help send one or two members to the JHR student conference in August. The status of this scholarship will be updated in the near future.

- Rachel is working on organizing for Seattle’s part of a nationally coordinated event in April for the anti-genocide advocacy group STAND. Scheduled for a weekend, it will focus on pressuring China in its role in the Darfur crisis. JHR will help promote and sponsor this important event. More details will be provided.

- JHR received an invoice from The Daily, for its recruitment advertisement last September. The chapter owes $50, and would like to pay this debt as soon as possible. If you are willing to part with a few dollars, please contact Diana or bring your donation to our next meeting.

- With the possibility of taking over the reins of leadership for JHR next school year, Rachel will discuss recruitment strategies at our next meeting. This is a very important topic as many of our members are graduating this June. If you’d like to help, please contact us: j4hr@u.washington.edu

Tabling: JHR will table in March to continue reaching out to new and potential members, to distribute its newsletter and pamphlet, and to inform the campus community about what else JHR is working on. If you’re interested in volunteering, please let us know: j4hr@u.washington.edu

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 27th, 6 pm, at Smith 109.
