Fall Quarter: After an unprecedented laborious project this early in the quarter, the group discussed shifting its focus to more social events to provide more opportunities for new members to become involved, and postponing publishing the next issue of The Liaison until winter quarter. These events include:

Tabling: JHR needs your help to table next week, Tuesday and Wednesday (10/30 & 10/31) from 11 am to 3 pm. Email us if you’re interested in volunteering. We will be passing out copies of The Liaison to promote the following events:

Speak Silence!: In early November, JHR will participate in the coordinated fundraiser, Speak Silence!. The group will work to create a dynamic and fun program to raise money for chapter operations and create awareness of the work we locally, and the work JHR does globally. Join us at our next meeting to take part in this wonderful event!

Seattle’s FCC Hearing: Details for the hearing are at the end of this document; JHR will help promote this poignant, rare opportunity to speak directly to federal media policymakers.

Media Literacy Workshop: The Common Language Project, a local independent media group, is interested in facilitating a media literacy workshop at the University of Washington. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the media landscape at local, state, national, and global levels, and to interact with professional journalists for human rights. This event will be promoted in the near future, and will take place in November.

Practice your interview skills!: JHR has set up an interview with the executive director of the Seattle Debate Foundation. This is tentatively scheduled for Monday, November, 5. If you are interested in taking on this invaluable opportunity to exercise your journalistic skills, please contact us immediately: j4hr@u.washington.edu

The group will look into setting up more opportunities to participate in conducting interviews on a regular basis.

Organizational Reflection: As a young student- and volunteer-run organization, JHR at UW is learning to manage growth and change. After a series of successes and failures, the group has decided to hold a meeting to reflect on and discuss the chapter’s progress and its ability to adapt to a fluid environment. Details on this very important meeting to be determined -- we hope you’ll join us and help shape the chapter’s future direction.

Next Meeting: Join us next Wednesday, October 31st at 6:15 pm in Smith 311, where we will plan our chapter’s Speak Silence campaign!

These topics include issues of cross-ownership of media outlets, network neutrality, and fair representation. The public is encouraged to attend and testify about why these issues are important, as commissioners are obligated to stay as long as testimony lasts.

On September 20, an official hearing in Chicago included approximately 7 hours of testimony. Activists are mobilizing for this rare opportunity – and are aiming for a turnout of 1,000 people. The hearing is tentatively scheduled for Friday, November 2. For more information, visit:
