JHR Minutes #19

Sunday, August 19th, 2007 @ Café on the Ave

Announcements: Please check out the announcements at the end of this report! This will be the last installment of announcements in meeting minutes; JHR is creating an open-source calendar (details TBA) that every member will have access to.

Full-power Licenses for Community Radio (deadline October 2007)!

Present: Nari Corley-Wheeler; Lily Le; Yuhei Miyauchi; Trevor Payne; Jacob Galfano

Governance & Growth:

The majority of the meeting was spent discussing an emerging concern as JHR at the University of Washington enters its second year of operation and faces the prospect of continued growth of membership.

At the last meeting, the group arrived at consensus that positions ought to arise naturally; in other words, members would define their own responsibilities according to their strengths and talents. However, frustrations were expressed that the approach failed, and that was proof that governance needs to be more delineated and efficient.

Not wanting to exclude anybody, the group decided it would ask members to consider positions they want to assume, and to email j4hr@u.washington.edu before the next meeting. A list of possible positions includes: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, chief editor, lead graphic designer, layout team, marketing/recruitment, and reporters.

This list is certainly not exhaustive, and the group encourages you to be creative about your contributions. As always, JHR respects your right to pass, and if you simply want to observe – please feel free to do so.

For our next meeting, please be ready to discuss what role you want to play, so that the group can document and create an efficient, effective, equitable, and sustainable governance structure.

Promotion & Recruitment:

The group has explored several promotional opportunities, including an ad in the Welcome Back edition of The Daily, tabling at UW Dawg Daze and RSO Week in Red Square, and a poetry slam featuring local students and artists (details TBA).

Tabling will allow the group to recruit new and returning students, and to hand out fliers, stickers and other JHR paraphernalia, newsletters, and to possibly raise funds for upcoming projects (bake sale).

The group hopes to extend membership and activity outside of the university community to bridge the gulf between the U-District and the rest of Seattle. If you have any ideas or would like to participate, please contact j4hr@u.washington.edu

Projects:

Website: To improve communication and avoid confusion, JHR will be exploring opportunities to organize online. Its JHR Student Chapters website is one possibility to create a communal calendar that all members will be able to access, as well as upload and download documents, protocols, and memoranda. If this website does not have the capacity to do so, the group will explore other online group options (Catalyst, Outlook, Google, Yahoo, etc.).

Archiving: Are you an organizer? JHR needs a volunteer who can put together a system that will organize meeting notes, email correspondence, project paraphernalia & step-by-step instructions, etc. This will take place on Catalyst Online Tools or JHR Student Chapters website until the club secures an office in the HUB where we can use a common computer.

Events: Nari and Rachel did research on potential speakers and films for the upcoming quarter, and posited the excellent idea that they be attached to the theme for the current issue of The Liaison. They will report more at the next meeting.

Newsletter: Rough drafts and article topics are due on September 7th for the upcoming issue; its theme – although not verbatim – is media. This can range from issues about media justice, media literacy, programming of youth, consolidation of ownership, etc. Please come to the next meeting with your article ideas, or email them to j4hr@u.washington.edu, and email your rough drafts by the above date.

The group aims to publish the newsletter by the first week of the fall quarter, and to distribute them during the events related to the beginning of the school year.

Toronto: Jacob will attend the student chapter conference in Toronto this week. He plans on bringing copies of each of the first two issues of The Liaison, as well as audio for each of the speaking events sponsored by the group. He will present the experience at the next meeting; if you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact him: jacob77@u.washington.edu

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be at 6 pm on Friday, August 31st at Café on the Ave. Hope to see you there!
